This book suggests us to think straight and it is a short read. Book is based on pragmatism and tells that a thought that helps in any way, leads to an action or improves our understanding, is a good thought. For instance, worrying the world would come to an end is fretting and not thinking straight. Thinking straight is when your thoughts lead you to action.
We cannot stop our thoughts, but we do have the liberty to choose one over another after reflecting on them. Author says that we should question the source of the belief and not the belief itself, which is interesting. Let us see if we could inculcate this questioning and reap benefits out of it.
There is another interesting information on choosing the right approach for solving a problem. Author discourages conventional thinking like using trial and error as its impractical to try it all and then decide or listing pros and cons as that would be the same for any action irrespective of the person involved. Conventional thinking always leads to conventional results.
He insists on knowing oneself as that clearly helps in understanding what we really want in our lives. When we know ourselves better, our thoughts and actions will be in harmony as that knowledge helps in being choosy about our thoughts, actions and life in general.
As we are humans with a lot of biases, we need to draw a line between our assumptions and real facts, so thoughts can be unbiased and clear. He doesn’t say facts are right, it could be right or wrong, but assumptions are mostly biased and built on our experiences.
Few key practical take-aways that could help us in thinking straight and honesty they are pragmatic.
